This has been such an interested discussion with really important questions and comments from students - I think mainly from the USA. The concerns are just the same in the UK. Some students receive really excellent practical experience with slps who find working with clients who stutter really fascinating, while other get discouraged by clinicians who are less confident. I agree with Nan that there is lots of material out there to help students get a sense of the therapist's role with these clients. One point I would like to make is that none of us can truly "know" what is best for our clients - it has to be a joint venture. It is ok to say "lets work this out together" with optimism and sense of exploration. Clients have lots of expertise already in knowing what helps, and doing more of it. Good luck.
