There are preschoolers who do not need immediate, direct treatment. A stuttering specialist should be able to differentially diagnose whether the severity and varieties of disfluency warrants direct treatment. One thing is for sure: NEVER DISCOUNT A PARENT. I hear of parents who were told: "Don't worry he'll out grow it. Or, "We don't sugget treating stuttering until age six." These blanket, ignorant comments can lead desperate parents to use desperate measures: become reactive. The minimum we should do is give indirect advice. The Stuttering Foundation and NSA have good info. A confirmed "stutterer"- one who is aware and struggling- needs direct treatment ASAP. Cheers, Tim
