As a current graduate student, I have learned that every parent handles situations differently. I agree that being proactive is important in order to encourage independence and confidence in individuals who stutter. I think that most parents who are reactive do so out of good intentions, not realizing the damaging effects it may have on their child in the long run. I think it is important that parents are educated and aware of reactive versus proactive responses. Hopefully, if parents are aware of their responses and the effects it may have on people who stutter, they will be more apt to practice proactive responses. My question is, if parents are still reactive even if they are aware that being proactive is more beneficial in the long run, how should SLPs handle this situation?
