(I am currently a second semester graduate student at the College of Saint Rose, where I am taking both fluency class and counsel). This article was very valuable to me, as I recently listened to a story shared by an adult fluency counsel client this past week. As soon this client arrived to the session, it was evident that he looked uncharacteristically upset – his face was very tense and troubled. After a few minutes, he shared his feelings about a friend who admitted that she was “freaked out” by his stuttering. He was simply traumatized by her ill-mannered comment and said that he “froze,” with no response to what she had said. After some of the counsel members asked him what he might have said if given the time to respond appropriately, he still was unsure. What would you have recommended saying to this “friend” that upset our client? Thank you for the great insight!
