Dear Carissa, Thank you for your comments and questions. I totally agree that these are universal life lessons! When you say ‘pull myself’ back, I’m guessing from my burn out? Alot of soul searching, personal growth work, workshops, reading and seminars with the most impactful being the Option Institute in Sheffield, Massachusetts. I was attracted there as I was searching for more ways to help my clients with the psychological, emotional, etc. aspects of stuttering. It's ad said "for those in the helping professions"...it spoke to me. And it was honestly work I had to do first for me before I could hope to “work’ with my clients effectively. I went for several programs and I've sent my staff and they've all loved it. I haven't been back since '90 but the impacts remain with me daily. So I highly recommend checking it out at option.org. At least consider buying a couple of Barry Kaufman’s books. If you’d like to speak further, feel free to email me at ais@stutteringtreatment.org Also, my thoughts are largely expanded upon in the new book, Stuttering Research and Practice: Volume 2, Current Issues and Approaches, Bernstein-Ratner & Tetnowksi (Eds.), Lawrence Erlbaum, Mahwah, NJ, 2006. Nan asked me to write the chapter on integrated treatment and it’s getting great response. All the best.
