Carissa, you ask a great question. We clinicians expect clients to have goals and to focus on them. I also have goals for myself as a clinician. For example, this year I am really focusing on “listening.” Before some sessions I sit down and review personal notes I have taken on how I want to improve my “listening.” A clinician who wants to focus on using positive language may want to do something similar. Try making positive language part of the lesson plan. Try role-playing the use of positive language with a colleague. The colleague would talk about stuttering in a negative manner and then you would practice reframing it in a more positive manner. Hope this was helpful.
