I am a graduate student at NYU and currently taking a fluency course. I truly enjoyed reading your article, and understand why using positive language with children as well as with adults may help decrease negative feelings and avoidance behaviors associated with stuttering. However, I was wondering about the adverse effects of using such language- is it possible that by using such positive language an individual may become so okay with their stuttering that they may choose to not receive therapy for it? And in such a situation, is it best to leave the client to his own decision or still encourage therapy?
