Michelle, thanks for writing. I am not adverse to people who stutter choosing speech therapy or not choosing speech therapy. You asked if the clinician’s use of positive language could drive a client to quit speech therapy? Many people who stutter work under the assumption that stuttering is simply not allowed. The use of positive language is just one way to demonstrate that stuttering is allowed. When clients begin believing that stuttering is allowed, this is a therapeutic success, not a failure. In general, if stuttering is no longer a problem for the client, I would personally be hesitant to try and convince them otherwise. Of course, every situation is going to be treated differently because no two clients are the same.
