Thanks for writing Kelly. In my opinion, the more comfortable you become with stuttering and the more you get to know and learn from people who stutter, the more using positive language will make sense to you. Many aspects of therapy may be “hard.” But as the clinician, it is our job to model behaviors and attitudes for our clients. For me, modeling negative language would actually be “hard” because I just do not buy or accept anymore that stuttering is bad. Sure I accept that stuttering is different from non-stuttering and that stuttering can be very hard to cope with, but using positive language for me just comes natural at this point.
