C. Hohenwald, you ask, “By using ‘person first’ positive language, have you noticed any changes in the parents attitudes towards stuttering in their own children?” I can point to situations in which parents return to therapy and mention how important it has been for them to hear positive language and to institute a positive language rule with the entire family including grandparents and aunts and uncles. Also, some parents feel that you, the clinician, are so very special for using and modeling positive language. Positive language is one solid brick to use in building a trusting and productive relationship with parents. Parents love their children so deeply and when you provide them with language to speak positively about stuttering, many parents really appreciate it.
