As a communication disorders student, I was always told to use person first language, i.e., "the person who stutters". However, I do see your point in how this may "soften" the issue of stuttering and can be a form of avoidance as well. The research from St. Louis (1999) suggests that there is not a stigmatizing connotation of the term "stutterer", but what has your experienece been? Have the people you worked with mostly like to be referred to as "stutterers" or "people who sutter"?
