Does "Hard" mean negative?

I agree with the use of positive language as a means to improve the self esteem of a PWS and remove the stigma, but what would you suggest to a child who uses "hard" to describe their speaking behaviors? In my opinion, I wouldn't correct them because he/she has judged that "it was 'hard' to get their words out" but do you think that "hard" and "difficult" still carry too much of a negative connotation? Thank you in advance.
