Amanda, thanks for writing. What is “appropriate” for one person is very inappropriate for another. As I have said a few times here and I really stick by it, parents feel an awful lot of guilt and desperation concerning stuttering. When parents are sitting across from you, barely know you, and are in a scary place, CORRECTING them is not a good idea. Of course, MODELING ideas is what we do and I completely support the modeling of productive language. My experience has been that when a parent is feeling fragile, we should take care not to act in ways that are heavy on guilt and light on productive results.
