Hi Catherine: I think that advances in technology and the Internet may help some people. That is, those who are heavily into technology and the Internet may be able to accomplish a lot without speaking. However, I don't think this helps the stutterer, for example, who wants to become a doctor or a lawyer where face-to-face interaction is required. Another worry, perhaps, is that technology may make it even harder to be stutterer. From my own perspective, I am increasingly encountering automated phone systems where you have to make a specific response. The phone then recognizes the spoken word and takes you to the right menu item/person/information. This happened just the other day when I called up Directory assistance and the automated voice said 'For what city' and I just could not get out 'Toronto'. As more and more services become voice activated (entering a condo unit, starting a car,) what impact will it have on PWS. Somewhat worrying.... I hope this helps. Dr. Marshall Rice York University
