Hi Marianne: I think that one of the basic problems is employers lack of knowledge about stuttering. For that matter, the general public seems to have a general misunderstanding of the cause of stuttering. My feeling (based on personal experience and research I have read), indicate that a significant number of people still think that stuttering is an emotional problem. I would hope that SLPs would help to educate their clients and the general community on the true cause (which appears to be genetic/biological). Some therapists I have known have given talks about stuttering at local schools, to educate the kids. That would be a great first step. Dr. Marshall Rice
