Hi Teresa: Thank you for your question. For most questions, we are relying on the perceptions of the PWS as to the reasons behind their lack of promotion in the workplace. We did ask several direct questions, however, on the topic of discrimination. For example, we asked "Has an employer ever told you that you won't be hired because of your stuttering'. We found that 14% of respondents were told directly that they would not be hired because of their stuttering. This is not perceptual based data, it is factual based. In addition, we asked an open-end question where we asked respondents to describe any instances of discriminantion in the workplace due to their stuttering. We had hundreds of pages of verbatims and many told of direct instances of discriminataion and being told they could not advance within their organization. Therefore, the problem does not appear to be just perceptual, it is a real form of discrimination. Best regards, Dr. Marshall Rice, York University
