Katie, Thanks for your comments. First of all, transactional analysis is not a separate form of stuttering therapy. I look at it as a system for delivering the counseling component that probably needs to be a part of every stuttering treatment program. I have been adapting TA to my treatment practice since I was introduced to it 30+ years ago. I have never been comfortable adopting one approach to stuttering treatment to the exclusion of all others. I have had some clients who needed mainly counseling/psychotherapy, because their symptoms were very mild but their emotional response to them extreme. I have worked with others doing almost entirely modification and/or fluency enhancing techniques because their speech symptoms were extreme, but their emotional status was solid. Of course, most clients fall between these extremes. In my experience, there is no universally effective, cookie cutter approach to stuttering treatment. It has to be tailored to each person. The key is to learn as many approaches and techniques as possible, and with the client, choose those which seem most appropriate. -WSR
