Dr. Shames, I value your observations on the Culture of Stuttering. I hope that progress would allow a move toward a model of Stuttering Culture. Members of Deaf Culture benefit from the connection, support and pride in that membership. While strides have been made with national stuttering groups to provide those same connections and pride, I still observe my teenage students feeling quite alone and reluctant to make that public a connection. Since exclusivity is an ethnocentric feature that serves to strenghthen and empower any cultural group, I can understand its value and forgive its constraints.
