Dear Mr. Nsubuga, You are so correct when you recognize that living in the past is no more helpful than living in the future. There is a saying: "The past is history. The future is a mystery. Now is a gift. That's why we call it THE PRESENT!" Now is the only place where we can live in ways to feel comfortable with ourselves. That doesn't mean we may be physically or emotionally at ease in the moment. But if, in the moment, we think and say and do those things that we know are in our best interest in the long-run, we will be able to look at ourselves in the mirror and say, "You have done well. You have done all you could to be the person you are meant to be." And, if sometimes we don't do our very best. That is, we say things we wish we had not. Or did not say things we wish we had. Did things or thought things we wish we had not. Or did not do things or think in ways we wish we had. We act kindly to ourself. We realize sometimes we will not behave exactly as we wish we would. We reflect on those times when we were disappointed in ourselves, try to determine why, and accept ourselves as "works in progress." We once again resolve to speak, think, and act in ways we prefer; seek help doing that if we know we need to; and keep moving foward step-by-step honoring our basic intentions. You are so correct: Our past does not need to be our future! Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the role of mind. You are very wise. All best wishes to you. Sincerely, Ellen-Marie Silverman
