[[I think your paper raised excellent points and will be very helpful to me in understanding the importance of changing one's core beliefs in order to change the behavior. Do you have any thoughts on how timing might relate to the effectiveness of using this strategy (or any strategy, really)? Was there a particular breakthrough for you regarding your fluency at a significant time in your life? Or is it coming to an understanding of these concepts that makes the difference? -- Haley Vincent, student ]] >>> Haley, I'm glad you found what I wrote about in "Mind Matters" helpful. Now, to answer your questions: 1) Timing is everything -- an old saying but true, like many old sayings! For this particular strategy, once it is learned, there is no reason not to apply it each time its use is warranted. Self-discovery is a life-long process, and it can be used to move that process along for speech and non-speech adjustments. And 2)The breakthrough came for me when I, as an adult, began standing on my own two feet by consistently speaking for myself instead of not talking or letting others speak for me. I was in my late 30's at the time!! Please read my paper entitled "My Personal Experience with Stuttering and Meditation" presented for the 2003 ISAD Conference for more information to you seem to want about my stuttering problem. It can be accessed through The Stuttering Homepage. Thank you for your interest in "Mind Matters," and good luck with your studies. Ellen-Marie Silverman
