Hey Greg! ..... Fascinating paper! As I was working my way through it (gosh, it sounded like it was written by a Ph.D.! <grin>) several thoughts occurred to me... ..... You said, "... there seems to be relatively little disagreement that the term stuttering refers to the domain of motor speech production and its disruption by speech disfluencies." I wonder, how does COVERT stuttering play into this? Some of those people can be TOTALLY FLUENT while using every trick in the book to avoid their greatest fear: stuttering! It's true that a lot of them aren't really as fluent as they THINK they are, but nevertheless the observable part of the stuttering iceberg can be next to nothing. If you don't stutter (than can be observed), are you really stuttering? I think you certainly can be. What do you think? ..... I remember a discussion we had once (on Stutt-L, I believe) about the possibility of "stuttering" in activities other than speech. And one guy said that he definitely stuttered when he MARCHED. He was in the Army, and he simply could NOT march worth a damn. The fears and tension associated with marching were exactly the same as when he was stuttering. Amazing... Marching is not "expressive communication" however. ..... You also mentioned "penmanship stuttering." OMG YESSS!!! That describes me to a tee! My script-longhand penmanship is nearly impossible. The muscles in my forearm even get tired when I THINK of doing that. It's beyond miserable. I can sign my name okay, but that's about all. If I force myself to write longhand, my penmanship is nothing more than illegible chicken scratches. Amazingly enough I can PRINT okay, but longhand is just out of the question. I've always been convinced in my own case that my longhand writing and my stuttering were somehow intermixed. And your paper tends to support that belief. Hooray! ..... Tell Courtney I said Hi! Hope to see you both (all THREE of you?) in Atlanta! ..... My best, ..... Russ ..... PS, Are you old enough to remember that "Veeeellly Intellesting" saying from the old "Laugh In" show? The German soldier who was spying on everyone? <laughing!>
