Hi Katie. You asked: [Was there any mention in these studies (or any other literature you have reviewed) of a familial background in stuttering behaviors? Do you think genetics plays the same role in people using sign as it seems to when looking at people who stutter only in oral communication?] The previous research on stuttered sign (or stuttering beyond speech) did not include data on family history. There really is a lifetime of research waiting for someone to tackle it! And yes--I do predict that there will be a genetic component in “stuttering” found in other expressive modes of communication. Quite simply, stuttering is not the pathology, but the effect or consequence of a common neural processing error, which likely has some type of polygenetic signature.
