Hi Dale--great to hear from you, and I appreciate your kind words. It is my personal bias that the future of effective stuttering treatment is not in the behavioral milieu. We’ve tried that, and it seems to provide limited and unstable results. Accordingly, I hope the immediate future includes research on prosthetic management; not a cure, and it’s not for all--but it provides another option for some. Improvements in the pharmaceutical treatment of stuttering also may provide some (non-cure) relief for some people who stutter. Deep Brain Stimulation may be another avenue worth investigating- -once we can narrow down stuttering behaviors to a specific neural structure or circuit. Finally- -genetic research seems to show promise, and may ultimately provide some clues for improved surgical, DBS, or pharmaceutical treatment during incipient and developmental stages of the pathology.
