I think you got to the heart of the matter, Janet, with your comment about fear. Fear holds us back from sooooo much in life. Usually,fear of the unknown looms largest in front of us when we are at a decision point, like the person to whom you referred. Cajoling or arguing a person out of their fear does not work and usually makes a person feel some guilt or shame for having the fear in the first place. Here again, acceptance and acknowledgment seems like the most fruitful place to begin. When we acknowledge a person's very real fear and give them a safe place to explore that fear, they often can find the courage they need to face it.
