Thanks for your question, Ellen. In my experience, it is difficult, maybe even impossible, to accept something about ourselves that we are not aware of. Remember the old addage that the first step in solving a problem is to identify what the problem is? That principle applies here, too. I think you captured the essence of acceptance by the clinician. People feel affirmed and safe in environments where they feel accepted; in order to accept something about ourselves, we need to feel like the other person accepts that facet of us, too.
