Dear Monique, You ask whether or not we should address the person-first issue in regards to treatment goals and objectives before therapy in order to meet an annual goal. I'm not sure what you mean by "before therapy" since most goals are addressed in therapy. I was also not sure what you meant by "annual goal," being unaware that stutterers have "annual goals." Accordingly, I won't try to address those two issues. You may or may not be correct in assuming that person-first versus direct labeling is a self esteem issue. In some stutterers it may be, as was illustrated in the paper. In most cases, however, I would suggest it is both a preference issue (based on negative experiences associated stuttering) and an advocacy issue (based on attempts to recognize that stuttering is not what defines us). The first is understandable; the second is laudable. But as I mentioned in a couple of the earlier replies, when language change is forced for political reasons, it fosters confusion and artificial barriers that are unnecessary and troubling. I'm not sure I addressed your main question, so let me know if I did not. Ken
