I am a first-year graduate student, studying to be a speech-language pathologist. All through my education I have been taught to use people-first language. I admit I went along, agreeing that that was the proper way to say things, but after reading this article, I was very surprised to hear that a debate exists between the use of people-first language. I was shocked and very interested to see that ASHA only uses people-first language, but the excellent point was made about how the decision is not backed up by data, especially in this age where evidence-based practice is supposed to be so important. I have to say now I am confused about what the proper and PC way to say it would be.
