Your discussion about labeling was very thought-provoking. Throughout my undergraduate schooling, I too was told to use person-first language when writing and speaking. I was somewhat surprised that your study reflected minimal difference in reactions to person-first labels versus direct labels. After reading the commentaries you included in your discussion, I realized that individuals prefer certain labels based upon their interpretation of the label. For instance, one individual may interpret the label, “stutterer,” as inconsiderate and offensive. Another individual may view the same label as empowering and a reflection of their acceptance of stuttering. When I have to make reference to a specific label when speaking or writing, I use the term that the individual in reference prefers.
