I am a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. I really enjoyed reading your article, “What’s in a name?” In all of my undergraduate classes, as well as the graduate classes I am currently attending, person-first terminology is stressed as the correct way to address people with disabilities. The person-first terminology has its positive in that it does acknowledge each person as an individual and not as their disability. However, like its counterpart, person-first terms do not abolish the negative beliefs that are attached to each disorder. Therefore, as both types of names bring forth negative aspects, I agree that the person with the disorder should choose the name they feel more comfortable with. Thank you for sharing your ideas.
