I found this string to be exceptionally interesting. I think probably giving the individual the right to choose how they are referred to is best. To test this theory I asked my young son who has diabetes if he would rather have someone refer to him as a diabetic or someone who has diabetes. He said he did not care but "diabetic does sound a lot meaner". Interesting reply. To avoid the eventual person reference problem, how about fluency challenged individual?
