Mr. Sugarman, my name is Susan Morton, and I am a graduate student at New York University. I thought your article was extremely interesting, and was impressed by the fact that you are a therapist who has had to deal with stuttering on a personal level. I also feel that your Stages of Change Model can be extremely useful in doing clinical work. However, I do have some questions regarding this model. When a person who stutters relapses, is it necessary for them to go back to the first step of Pre Contemplation and work through the other steps consecutively? Do adults have an easier time than children working through the Stages of Change Model? How can you get a young child to understand and work through these steps?
