Michael: I really enjoyed your gardening analogy! Being from Wisconsin, and a novice gardener, I'm not sure how the following will fit with organic gardening. I know that my wife and I have often used cetain materials as fertilizer that are organic (manure), but not very pleasant, to help prepare our soil. We have had excellent results with it over time as the material breaks down and provides nutrients to the soil. We have seen some clients in our clinic who have either been prompted or motivated to come to therapy as a result of an unpleasant experience or incident. Likewise, we have had clients, actively engaged in therapy or who are maintaining what they have learned in therapy who experience a significant backward slide in their communication abilities. Initially the experience is unpleasant, but with time, and hopefully recovery, the experience provides an opportunity to learn problem-solving strategies that they can use when similar events occur in the future. In a sense, the negative experience has been broken down, and used as a nutirent for developing more effective communication abilities.
