Dear Professor Susca, As a graduate student in speech therapy currently taking Fluency course, I found your metaphors very interesting and useful. Nowadays everything “organic” is good, so as the SLP kind of it! As you mentioned I found one of the biggest challenges a SLP faces is to teach clients that magic fix is not possible and the client needs to work hard( give time and effort and care) to reach his/her goals. I loved your idea of companion therapy or “speech buddy” in school system. In my daughters’ school they have reading buddies, and I feel that it works when younger students work with the older ones; I believe both people benefit from this. As you mentioned the secret of the receipt is choosing a good companion (because there can be the ones that actually have negative effects) .A good companion can decrease stutterer’s loneliness, and increase his communication experience. I believe that some children learn a lot more from other children than they learn from adults! You also talked about negative therapy and postponing start of therapy to a different time. Initially I felt that we needed to start ASAP, but you are absolutely right because I have heard of experiences where because the client wasn’t ready, he resisted receiving therapy and never went back to SLP to benefit from it. I am hoping that I can use your analogy in my future experiences as SLP because I think it is one that clients can understand easily. Thanks for a great paper! Suzanne
