Your comments are encouraging. The goal that kept me working on this book was to help people feel what stuttering can be like. I believed from the start (1980) that unless people have an opportunity to experience another's thoughts and feelings about what it can be like to stutter, they will not be especially helpful modifying the behavior itself. Other chapters in Jason's Secret portray concerns and feelings motivating him in interactions with distant parents and an older stepbrother who teases him. His involvement in speech therapy also highlights the ambivalence a child may have about enrollment in school therapy. You may find the dialogues between Jason and his speech therapist helpful, too.
