Speaking as someone who stutters and who is deathly afraid of telephones, I have to say that my biggest problem is that I can't see the other person's reaction to my speech.

Now when I have to talk on the phone, I tend to take a deep breath and hope that I don't stutter to badly. I take pains to talk slowly and use vowel prolongation, but I still have difficulties and wonder what the other end of the phone is thinking.

But in today's society, I'm straddled with a phone in the office, a pager and a cellular phone so even though I try to avoid using one, I'm still stuck. I'm not as afraid now of using a phone, but everytime it rings, my heart still skips a beat or two or fifty.
