Different situations call for different responses. Once, in a trial before a judge, during my opening statement I said to the court reporter that I stuttered and to please let me know if she had trouble understanding anything. When conducting depositions, I inform the deponent that I stutter and to let me know if he/she has any trouble understanding me. Once, in an opening statement, I told the jury that, before I was born, the devil came to me and said that he would give me a choice, I could either be overweight or stutter. Not knowing what either one was, I asked "can't I have both?"
