Hi Bobby:

Yours is a wonderful story, and you told it with verve and personality, so how could it go wrong. Thank you. I echo the comments of the others.

Whenever I, or one of my students, encounter this phenomenon of the client being fluent in the clinic but not outside, we also go outside and model different behaviors for the client, but we also do something else. We try to help the client understand why there is such a difference in fluency level between the two situations. Usually, the answer is that the clinician understands stuttering, knows that the client stutters, and will not be judgmental about stuttering. So, I like to help the client learn how to do what they can to help other listeners, not just clinicians, understand the disorder and not make stupid judgments about the person. When the stutterer takes on this task of educating the listeners there is quite a remarkable benefit.
