Tracy:

I feel that I had reached the point in my life where I was ready to commit to therapy, but it had to the "right" type of therapy.

Over the years I've had many different types of therapy and none worked for any extended amount of time. It may have been because I wasn't ready yet, or I hadn't accepted my stuttering as an integral part of my persona.

The therapy and subsequent support that I received at New Mexico State University was unlike any other that I had received. The student clinicians and Clinic Staff treated me in a manner that I didn't feel like a "number". They made me feel that I was a person with something to contribute to society, and that my speech was only a minor "bump in the road".

They did emphasize that I would not be "cured" of my stuttering, but with time and effort I would be able to reduce the amount of stuttering, and would be more accepting of the stuttering that I did. The therapy that I received struck the proverbial cord in that my student clinicians helped me to start accepting my speech instead of rejecting it.

Whether the time was right or the therapy was the "right" one is up to a Psychiatrist/Psychologist to decide, but it worked for me and that is what matters.
