Chalsea:

The support system that developed during my therapy definitely helped me to improve my speech. Never before have I had such a system in place (except for my family), and knowing all of these people were there, the student clinicians, faculty supervisors and even the clinic staff made a big difference.

Since I have been out of therapy now for quite a few months, I still stutter, but not as bad unless I’m having a really bad day, or I’m in a stressful situation like a job interview. I still rely on the stuttering listservs and occasional contact with my student clinicians for support. Being the independent type of person I am, eventually I will use them less and less, but I will know that they are always as close as an email.

As you develop in your skills as an SLP (I assume that you are a student clinician), remind your clients that they have a support network consisting of you, their families, friends, and the stuttering listservs. Knowing that support will be there for them in the rough times will help. ---Bobby
