We see children for group therapy from about 8 - 9 years. They work so well together and shared experience of stuttering is so important. With our group we also run parallel groups with both parents too - a big commitment is required but is so valuable. For those families who can't attend a full group, we would see them individually but with the parents too. We don't talk about Cures or Total Fluency - we don't think that is helpful and for some it is not possible. We help the kids to notice what they can do to help themselves - most of them have some level of fluency available but may have less awareness of how to achieve it and why it is so variable. We don't impose techniques either - if they want to slow or slide or use an easy onset that's fine. It is a partnership, and exploration and a problem solving exercise - hope I get this sent properly this time.
