Hi! I thought I'd take a quick stab at your question. In my experience (personal and clinical), the child knows something is wrong well in advance of anyone pointing it out. To know that, you just have to look at what they're doing or talk to them about their speech (without even mentioning a problem). In most kids, you'll see attempts to get out of the stuttering or visible fear or shame. I don't have an age for you though - sorry.
