I don't know about other SLP's, but I have always been willing to try a device as long as the client wanted to. My experience was that they offer a limited support. They help only with fluency, of course, not with anything else, and they only help as long as they are worn. There is no continued effect. Still, that is something. I found an additional benefit: After a while the clients got tired of wearing the device. Partly, it lost a little of its effectiveness, but not completely. Also, they got tired of having to wear such a cumbersome thing. It made them feel freaky. As their interest in the device lessened, they began to realize that the skills I was teaching them in therapy were equally or more effective in dealing with the problem and had the added benefit that they didn't show. So I always got a boost in therapeutic participation after the clients had had some experience with the device.
