Dear Freida,

I got distracted while composing my previous reply to your note - and to sum up what I was describing re my reading to my children, I think that the benefits lie, in part, in the combination of a relaxed and supportive social environment plus the fact that I remove performance pressures and anxieties from my reading by putting the emphasis on the sound and rhythm of the language itself.

I should also say that this loops back into my lifelong interest in the performance of poetry - but that's another story.....
