Very elightening article, and very relevant for rural Minnesota! Your article indicated that "establishing rapport with the family may be difficult if the clinician is female and the culture of the family does not accept the female in this type of role." I look out at the students in our program this year, and can count only four men in our current program. All will be fine additions to the field and will provide good service in the future. But the majority of our students have always been female. Do you have any suggestions for these future speech clinicians, many of whom will be serving children in our school systems who are from a different culture, on how to handle this potential problem of "acceptance," particularly when there is no alternative for them (they must serve all children diagnosed as eligible for services) or the child (there are no male clinicians to refer them to)?
