Judy, you raise an interesting point. Fortunately, we have more males and minorities entering our field. There are a couple of suggestions I would make to new clinicans, especially those working in rual areas. I believe one of the most important tasks would be to research as much information as possible about the potential client(s).One important factor to consider is the setting for treatment. Will it be in the home clinic, school, etc. The setting will play a significant role on how we conduct interviewing and testing. The setting may also dictate with whom the clinican will interact with from the family. The other suggestion is to avoid the "we-they" situation. Meaning "we" are correct in our assessment and treatment plan and "they" will just go along with the plan. Understanding the communication styles and beliefs of various cultures is a challenge. But one we as professional must be willing to tackle in this profession. Thanks for you comment.
