I was very interested to read your article on "The Link Between ADHD and Stuttering: A Closer Look." I appreciated the practical suggestions that were provided on how to most effectively treat a child whho haas both ADHD and stuttering. Since this is such an interesting area of study, and since there is not a wealth of research available, I have a few questions for you! First of all, I realize that children with ADHD generally need a more systematic and frequent reward system than most of the other children, therefore making a token economy system a viable option. However, this is where I am confused. I thought that the token economy system was utilized strictly as a behavior modification technique, yet it is my understanding that the children receive a token for correct identification of a disfluency. Thus, it appears to me that the token economy rewards correct answers and not appropriate behavior alone. Is there another method which can be employed that rewards the targeted behavior alone? I also realize that this conference focuses on children who stutter, but I was wondering if any research had been conducted on adults who suffer from ADHD and also stutter. If so, do the suggestions for therapuetic interventions (shorter sessions, frequent breaks, rooms or booths with four walls with limited distractions) apply to the adult therapy sessions as well? Thank you for your time and best of luck in your future research endeavors.
