I have a student who is ADHD. Before the diagnosis, the child displayed the characteristics of ADHD, but was very fluent. Once he received Ritalin for the diagnosis, he became very dysfluent. When he doesn't take the medication, he is fluent. However, he displays the characteristics of ADHD. His mom is very concerned about her son's fluency impairment because she wants her son to speak fluently, but she also wants her son to behave appropriately in the classroom so he can learn. I would like to know if there have been any studies that indicated Ritalin may cause some ADHD children to become dysfluent, and,if so, are there any other medications available for ADHD that may not cause this side effect.
