Hello, Laura.

Most non-pharmaceutical therpaies that address dissociation involve exposure to the event or circumstances that trigger dissociation, but under controlled conditions. The client is then aided in becoming aware of what is happening, and in maintaining awareness of his or her state. This often allows the client to develop ways to circumvent or to diminish the effect of the dissociation. In rough outline, this parallels the "awareness- acceptance- change" model of stuttering therapy espoused by therapists such as Woody Starkweather .

There are pharmaceutical treatments for dissociation also, but none have been examined with reference to stuttering. These treatments are usually reserved for severe dissociation, and are administered by psychiatrists.
