Sara,

When I retire, in fifteen months, I want to go back to Latvia where I was born and work both to inform people about stuttering as well as to help disseminate information about available help. (Right now I am living in United States.)

It was very interesting for me to read that a wealthy country like Germany does not have a better social service model to help persons who stutter.

I dread thinking what type of environment and ignorance I will find in Latvia. My few feeble attempts to try to find anybody in Latvia who stutters or who helps people have not yet yielded any results.

However, after hearing of your effort, I will redouble my effort! :-)

Some questions for you:

a) Did the former Eastern Germany have any stuttering therapists? I am interested in this because Latvia was also under communists and probably had the same social services.

b) Have you heard anything about Eastern Europe and any activities of either self-help groups, therapists, etc.

c) Do you have any suggestions for me how to proceed with organizing things in Latvia, since, there might be some similarities with Germany.

I am very, very happy for you that you are now in the right track in schooling. I am sure that you will succeed with whatever profession you choose.

Gunars

p.s. I admire your voluntary stuttering. There are many people twice your age who find this about the most difficult thing that they have ever done in their lives.
