Steve and Chris, I am currently working with a 12 year old client who stutters. During our one hour therapy session, my client does not stutter. He is a very laid back person and does not show much enthusiasm. I notice when he talks he uses the interjection "um" alot of the time. He also hesitates and pauses when speaking. I wonder if this is because he is preventing himself from stuttering or if he is just thinking. He has related to me that he stutters about 8-10 times a day and his stuttering episodes usually happen at home. He also explained to me that he knows about 70% of the time when he is about to stutter. When we discuss his feelings about stuttering, he doesn't go indepth about how he feels. His usual response is "I'm not sure." My questions to you are: Do you think I could be working with a covert stutter? What suggestions do you have for me that might help my client deal with his stuttering and his feelings towards stuttering? What stuttering techniques do you think might work with him?

Thank you, H. Dietrich
